The Test You Can't Fake
Reading an explanation and nodding along is the most reliable way to convince yourself you understand something you do not. The cure is to make you produce the explanation yourself.
There is a famous piece of advice attributed to Richard Feynman: if you want to know whether you understand something, try to teach it to a child. It sounds like a study tip. It is actually a test: one of the few that cannot be faked.
Why explaining is the hardest retrieval act
When you explain a topic in your own words, the act that self-explanation research puts at the centre of understanding (Chi et al., 1989), you are forced to do three things at once: retrieve the ideas, integrate them into a coherent line, and monitor whether it actually holds together. Any gap you have been papering over surfaces the instant you try to put it into a sentence. You cannot hand-wave to a blank page, and you cannot bluff a listener who keeps asking "but why?"
This is the generation effect, first delineated by Slamecka and Graf (1978): material you produce is remembered far better than material you merely read. Teaching back weaponises it. The explanation is both the study method and the exam.
Two audiences, two failure modes
Explaining well is not one skill. Different listeners expose different weaknesses:
- Explain it to a child. This forces simplicity: everyday words, a real analogy, no jargon used as a crutch to cover a hole. The trap here is oversimplifying into something that is clear but wrong. Simple but accurate is the bar.
- Explain it to a knowledgeable peer. This forces precision: the correct terms, the actual mechanism, no vague gestures where a real "how" belongs. The trap here is hiding behind terminology you cannot unpack.
Vague hand-waving and jargon-as-a-crutch are opposite failures. Being made to do both, for the same topic, leaves very little room to fool yourself.
Understanding is not a feeling of understanding. It is a thing you can demonstrate on demand, in your own words, to someone who probes.
Why it deserves to be a gate
Most steps in learning are worth doing but fine to be imperfect at. This one is different. It is the point where "I've seen it explained" has to become "I can explain it", and it is worth making that a genuine checkpoint you have to pass before moving on to harder work.
A checkpoint is uncomfortable by design. It refuses to let you advance on the feeling of understanding, the illusion of knowing that Dunlosky and Metcalfe (2009) document. That illusion is precisely the failure mode that sends confident, hard-working students into an exam and out the other side baffled by their own result. Everything before the gate builds toward being able to teach the topic. Everything after it assumes you can. The gate is what makes that assumption safe.
If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough, and now you know exactly where to look.
The gift of failing this test is that it fails specifically. You do not walk away thinking "I'm bad at this." You walk away knowing the one link in the chain that snapped when you tried to say it out loud. That is the most useful thing a study session can hand you.
