Be Wrong First
Attempting a question before you have studied the material, and failing it, makes you learn the correct answer better than if you had spent that same time simply studying. Being wrong first is not a detour. It is a shortcut.
This is one of the stranger, more robust findings in the science of learning. It is called the pretesting effect (Richland, Kornell and Kao, 2009), and it turns a deeply held intuition on its head. We assume you should learn a thing and then test yourself. The evidence says a failed test before learning primes the mind to absorb the answer when it arrives (Kornell, Hays and Bjork, 2009).
Why failing first works
When you guess at a question you cannot yet answer, you do two useful things at once. You activate whatever you already half-know about the topic, creating mental "slots" the correct answer can later drop into (Kornell, Hays and Bjork, 2009). And you generate a real question in your own head (Slamecka and Graf, 1978), so that when the answer comes, it lands as a resolution rather than as one more inert fact to file away.
A fact that answers a question you were genuinely holding is remembered far better than the same fact delivered cold. The wrong guess builds the hook (Kornell, Hays and Bjork, 2009). The right answer hangs on it.
The map you get for free
A pre-test does a second job: it shows you, precisely, where your gaps are before you have sunk hours into the material. Most studying is undirected: you reread the whole chapter because you cannot tell which parts you already have. A short burst of guessing turns "study everything" into "study these things," which is where the time should have gone anyway.
So why do tools punish it?
If being wrong is useful, marking it in angry red and celebrating "correct" in triumphant green is exactly the wrong instinct. Yet that is the default everywhere, because right/wrong is easy to render and feels like feedback.
The cost is subtle and real. For a perfectionist, or an over-achiever, or many neurodivergent learners, a wrong answer flagged as failure triggers the precise anxiety a pre-test needs to switch off. The whole value depends on the student being willing to guess and be wrong without flinching. Punish the wrongness and you suppress the guessing, and lose the effect entirely.
When being wrong is the point, the interface must refuse to punish it. No red, no green, no score. Just: here is what you thought, here is what's true, now let's go.
The goal of the first attempt is not to be right. It is to care about the answer before you're told it.
There is a small courage in guessing at something you know you'll get wrong. The least a study tool can do is not make you pay for it. Done right, the pre-test is the calmest, lowest-stakes moment in a study session. It is also one of the most valuable.
